Dance/Work-in-Progress Showing
Co-presented by Williams College and Aaron Davis Hall
After a two week residency at MASS MoCA, Marlies Yearby (celebrated choreographer of RENT), composer Craig Harris, and video artist Jonas Goldstein offer a first glimpse of their ambitious work-in-progress. Brown Butterfly -- a multi-layered, percussive dance -- celebrates Muhhamed Ali's larger-than-life presence in sport, politics, and social change. Partially funded by the Bari Lipp Initiative for Dance. $7

Stacy Dawson: Best Western
Dance/Work-in-Progress Showing
Choreographer Stacy Dawson offers a showing of her latest dance-musical after a week-long MASS MoCA residency and before its New York premier. Dipping deep into the well of country music fame and misfortune, Best Western is a dance inspired by some of the best southern fried rock. Features David Neumann last seen at MASS MoCA with Dawson in the hilarious Pearl River. Partially funded by the Bari Lipp Initiative for Dance. $7

My Mother's First Olympics

This true story of a blind woman who becomes Israel's lawn-bowling champion. A sensitive documentary filled with courage, humor, and determination. Israeli filmmaker Ran Carmelli follows his vivacious mother, Tami, to the 1997 Para-Olympics. $5

Fire and Ice - A Winter Gala at MASS MoCA
MASS MoCA's galas are legendary -- great music, non-stop dancing, elegant food and drink, all in a beautiful factory setting -- and Fire and Ice promises to be just as memorable. Tickets start at $75 for the party; the party plus an elegant pre-gala dinner starts at $250. Proceeds support MASS MoCA's innovative roster of exhibitions, performances, and education programs. Straight from London's Club Circuit The Tiger Lillies, probably England's strangest band, join Canada's hottest dance ensemble, Holy Body Tattoo, for a live music/dance celebration of the sensual forces of submission and control. Circa unfolds as a series of tango-inspired duets a grainy film backdrop of a distant Paris. Performance contains mature content and may not be suitable for children. An afternoon-long celebration of the African Diaspora, the second annual Stalwart Originality Conference features film screenings and live performances by some of Williams College's most talented African American filmmakers, musical groups, and performance artists. This year's event will spotlight the religious, cultural, and familial ties that bind the African American community. $5

As Hitler invaded Europe, a young Jewish baseball player challenged Babe Ruth's homerun record. This humorous and nostalgic documentary about Greenberg, an extraordinary baseball player who transcended religious prejudice to become an American icon, won an International Sports Video & Film Award and the Audience Prize from the Hamptons International Film Festival. $5

The Moth: Let the Games Begin
Storytelling
From New York City's smoky lounges comes the acclaimed storytelling collective the Moth, bringing master storytellers to North Adams for an evening of tall tales about strange play. The Moth's quite remarkable work is revitalizing the art of storytelling. At MASS MoCA six people will tell stories around the theme of games. Past Moth events have included the likes of Buck Henry, Ethan Hawke, and Stanley Crouch -the line-up coming to MASS MoCA is still TBD. Sponsored by The Porches Inn. $12

Sandra Burton: Soul Survival
Dance
Through dance and storytelling choreographer Sandra L. Burton interprets the power of body rituals to elevate the spirit through glimpses of Shaker, Islamic, and African-American life. This site-specific work was inspired by current exhibit Mona Hatoum's Domestic Disturbance and will be performed in the galleries with the art. Sponsored by The Porches Inn. $12 adults/$8 students

Latin Dance Party
Co presented by Williamstown Jazz Festival
New York's hottest trombonist and bandleader Jimmy Bosch and his all-star Latin band take over the night, filling the air with the irresistible hot Salsa rhythms. Bosch is musical director for salsa superstar Marc Anthony and performs with Latin jazz luminaries Ruben Blades, Manny Oquendo, and Eddie Palmieri. Jimmy Bosch's 1999 release was hailed "Best Salsa Album" by Newsday. Sponsored by Metroland Magazine. $16 adults/$10 students/$8 kids

A beautiful and gritty portrait of America's urban game and the culture that surrounds it. This film about basketball-centric life on the Brooklyn blacktop follows a team of playground superstars, led by the legendary Ed "Booger" Smith, through a summer in the 1990s. $5
