Kidspace at MASS MoCA Offers Holiday Art Classes

(North Adams, Mass.) During the holiday vacation week, Kidspace at MASS MoCA will offer three art classes for children as well as special extended public hours. From December 26 through December 31, Kidspace will be open (including Tuesday, December 27 when MASS MoCA's galleries will also be open) from noon - 4 PM. Kidspace and MASS MoCA will be closed on December 25 and January 1.

Kidspace's current exhibit, Reading Sculpture: Long-Bin Chen, features sculptures of human heads and figures comprised of recycled printed materials such as phone directories, encyclopedias, and magazines. Children are invited to join in a special Kidspace art class to learn how the Taiwanese artist created these spectacular works of art and make their own recycled book jewelry, artist book, or hat.

On Tuesday, December 27, from 10 - 11:30 AM, kids ages 5+ are invited to a drop-off art class to make "Reading Jewelry". The kids will create their own original jewelry using pieces of recycled phone directories and a variety of beads, string, and wire. There is a materials fee of $5 per child and pre-registration is required for the class.

On Wednesday, December 28, from 9:30 - 11:30 AM, Kidspace will host "Artists' Books", a drop-off art class for kids ages 7+. After viewing the exhibition, kids are invited to become the author, designer, and publisher of their own book by using collage materials, images, and text to tell a story. Admission is $5 per child. Pre-registration is required.

Kidspace rounds out the holiday season with "Outrageous New Year's Eve Hats" on Thursday, December 29, from 10-11:30 AM. Ring in the New Year with this annual hat-making workshop and create a wacky, festive hat made out of recycled books and other unique materials. Geared toward children ages 4+ and adults, tickets are $7 for one child and one adult, and $2 for each additional child or adult and pre-registration is required.

While a fee is charged for the art classes, admission during public hours to Kidspace is free. Pre-registration is required for the art classes. To register for classes, or for more information, please call Kidspace at 413.664.4481 x8131, or email at kidspace@massmoca.org.

Kidspace is a collaborative project of the Williams College Museum of Art, the Clark Art Institute, and MASS MoCA. Additional funding for Kidspace art classes has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Proud Trust Foundation.

MASS MoCA, the largest center for contemporary visual and performing arts in the United States, is located off Marshall Street in North Adams on a 13-acre campus of renovated 19th-century factory buildings.
