July 18, 2006 Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet Wraps Up the Summer Film Season at MASS MoCA(North Adams, Mass.) MASS MoCA presents the finale of its outdoor cinema season with Romeo and Juliet, renowned director Franco Zeffirelli's (Tea with Mussolini, 1990's Hamlet) quintessential 1968 film adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare. The film stars Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting as the star-crossed lovers, with John McEnery and Milo O'Shea, and is narrated by Sir Lawrence Olivier. Romeo and Juliet will be shown on the 50' screen in MASS MoCA's Cinema Courtyard C on Friday, August 18, at 8:30 PM to conclude the Ahistoric Occasion film line up. "A more romantic and realistic rendition of the nature of love, I have never seen," says Steve Rhodes of Internet Reviews. Known for staging and filming the classics of literature and opera, Zeffirelli also directed Taming of the Shrew (1967), La Traviata (1982), and Hamlet (1990), as well as the 1977 TV mini-series, Jesus of Nazareth. Born in Florence in 1923, Zeffirelli also made a film about his childhood, Tea with Mussolini, in 1999. Romeo and Juliet will be shown outdoors, weather permitting, in Cinema Courtyard C, or inside the Hunter Center. Doors open at 7:30 PM, with food and drink from Lickety Split available before and during the screening. Tickets for Romeo and Juliet are $7. MASS MoCA members receive a 10% discount. Tickets are available in advance through the MASS MoCA Box Office located off Marshall Street in North Adams from 10 A.M. until 6 P.M. daily.
