About the Artist

A native of Syracuse, New York, Eric Carle and his parents moved to Germany when he was just six years old. After graduating from Germany's prestigious Akademie der bildenden Kunste art school he followed his dream of returning to the land of his happiest childhood memories. He arrived in New York in 1952 and soon found a job as a graphic designer for The New York Times. When the striking picture of a red lobster that Carle had created for an advertisement caught the eye of respected educator and author Bill Martin, Jr. Marin asked Carle to illustrate a book he had written. The result--Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?--is still a favorite with children and adults everywhere. Today, Carle's best known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has sold over sixteen million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages.

Activity for Kids

Create a caterpillar like in Eric Carle's most famous book The Hungry Caterpillar. You will need tissue paper, glue, paper, a pencil, and a scissor. Draw the outline of a caterpillar on your paper. Cut out different shapes in tissue paper and glue down inside the caterpillar outline. You can overlap the tissue paper to make different colors and effects, too.
