Iconic Canadian director Guy Maddin set his
2003 odd masterpiece The Saddest Music in the
World in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba,
during the Great Depression. The film, which
stars Mark McKinney (of Kids in the Hall),
Isabella Rossellini, Maria de Medeiros, David
Fox, and Ross McMillan, is a comic musical
that unfolds around a beer magnate’s contest
to find the saddest piece of music in the world.
The contest draws entrants from across the
globe, but ultimately boils down to competition
within one family. Strange, sad, and funny in
equal measure, the film is shot with Maddin’s
off-kilter genius.
