The Bang on a Can All-Stars return to MASS MoCA for the first time in five years with a new multimedia project featuring hot-off-the-presses new commissioned works by Tyondai Braxton, Mira Calix, Florent Ghys, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Christian Marclay, Todd Reynolds (performing live), Julia Wolfe, and Nick Zammuto (also performing live). These composers went into the field of sound itself to find something old or record something new, and responded to what they found with their music, in a dialogue. All-Stars playing in this concert include Ashley Bathgate, Vicky Chow, and David Cossin. Collaborators include Gregg August, Derek Johnson, Eileen Mack, Todd Reynolds, and Nick Zammuto.
David Lang: "Field Recordings is a kind of ghost story. We asked 9 composers from different parts of the music world to find a recording of something that already exists - a voice, a sound, a faded scrap of melody - and then write a new piece around it. And so they did."
A preview of Field Recordings.
