Invisible Cities Opening

Free for members, $8 for not yet members

Be the first on your block to see work by Diana Al-Hadid, Lee Bul, Kim Faler, Carlos Garaicoa, Liz Glynn, Mary Lum, Emeka Ogboh, Sopheap Pich, Francesco Simeti, and Miha Strukelj on display as part of Invisible Cities.

For centuries the urban landscape has been both a familiar and fantastical site for people of all cultures. These ten international artists re-imagine this landscape in our exhibition. The title is a nod to Italo Calvino’s beloved book which recounts Marco Polo’s vivid descriptions of the metropolises of the great Kublai Khan’s fading empire. Like Polo’s poetic imagery which leaves the reader wondering if the cities he describes are real or perhaps all different versions of his home city of Venice, the varied works in the show explore how perceptions of place are shaped by personal influences -- memory, desire, and loss -- as well as by cultural forces -- history and the media.

Curator Susan Cross and some of the artists will be in attendance at the opening reception. If you're a member please contact Rebecca Wehry to reserve. If not, please think about joining, we'd love to have you!

Stay after the reception for an Alt Cabaret performance by Emily King in our Club B-10. More details here .

This project has been supported by a grant from the Artists' Resource Trust and the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, and in part by, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
