The 'Before' Pictures: From Mill to Museum
Sep 1999 - Mar 2000
Galleries
The exhibition featured 50 color and black-and-white photographs (and one video) taken of the MASS MoCA site over the past decade by seven artists. MASS MoCA's 13-acre, 27-building site has appealed to many photographers, both locally known and internationally famous, who have documented the peeling paint, the odd configurations of brick, the pigeons, and the castoffs of the industry that were here before the museum opened to the public on May 30, 1999.
Each photographer represented in the exhibition captures something unique in the buildings before the completion of the museum's galleries and theaters. Works by Joan Benjamin, David Byrne, Christopher J. Gillooly, Jeff Kleiser, Michael Jacobson-Hardy, John Kuykendahl, and Nick Whitman
