Kicking off at 4pm and running straight through to 10pm, the Bang on a Can Marathon @ MASS MoCA showcases an eclectic super-mix of new and unusual music performed by Summer Festival fellows and faculty alike. These cutting-edge musicians come from all over the globe and will present a similarly diverse program: this year’s highlights include Conlon Nancarrow’s Piano Studies arranged for live instruments, Julia Wolfe's raucous Tell Me Everything, Edgard Varese's legendary Octandre, Osvaldo Golijov's lush and haunting Tenebrae, San Francisco composer Dan Becker's driving Gridlock for large ensemble, Luciano Berio's early masterpiece Circles, Evan Ziporyn’s meditative three-movement string quartet Breathing Space, Michael Gordon’s fierce the light of the dark, Christine Southworth's charged Super Collider for electronic gamelan and string quartet, and David Lang’s tense increase for large ensemble.
Also, Evan Ziporyn's arrangements of pieces by Nik Baertsch for a mixed ensemble that involves oboe, recorder, electric guitar, and three Uzbek musicians playing traditional Uzbek instruments.
And much more!
Come and go as you please, or stay right through.
Galleries are open until 8 PM for this performance!
