The legendary jazz/funk trio returns to North Adams with a full head of steam, having just released Radiolarians III, the third installment of its 2009 3-album, 3-tour project Viva La Evolution. Last time they were here with what Mojo magazine calls their “freaky funk, free interludes, amazing group chemistry and chops that slacken the jaw,” they sold out in a blizzard. Will Hermes of the Village Voice says, “Medeski, Martin, & Wood are the leaders of this new school [of jazz], if anyone is—working the groove, probing the cosmos, and avoiding jazz-lite clichĂ©s.” (Listen Now!)

Since they last played at MASS MoCA Medeski, Martin, & Wood have released themselves from record label contracts, creating their own, Indirecto. As a result of this freedom they devoted the last year to their Radiolarians project. Like its microscopic organism namesake, Radiolarians inverts the natural order of things and produced three albums out of fresh, new music that was polished and perfected while on tour and only recorded once the band was off the road. Now the band is doing what it does best, touring, and will mark MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center as one of the venues lucky enough to experience their freshly released album.

Standing Room Only.
